How to Choose the Right WFA Jersey: Sizing, Styles, and What to Look For

A WFA jersey is more than a piece of clothing. It's a declaration. It says you know about women's tackle football, you care about the league, and you're proud to represent your team whether you're in the stands, watching at home, or walking through a parking lot on game day.

But with home editions, away editions, alternates, fan styles, and player styles all available — and sizing that runs differently depending on the cut — choosing the right jersey can feel more complicated than it should be.

This guide cuts through all of it.

Understanding the Jersey Types

WFA Gear carries three jersey styles, and they serve different purposes.

1. Game Jersey — Pro Edition

The closest thing to what players wear on the field. Made from a performance mesh fabric that's lightweight, breathable, and built for movement. The numbering and lettering use heat-pressed graphics for durability, and the cut is athletic — tailored closer to the body with longer hemlines front and back.

Best for: Fans who want the most authentic look, people who run hot, game-day wear in warm weather.

Fits: True to size. If you're between sizes, size up for a looser, more relaxed wear.

2. Fan Jersey — Classic Edition

A slightly more relaxed construction than the Pro Edition. The fabric is a softer poly-cotton blend rather than performance mesh, which makes it more comfortable for all-day wear. The same team colors, numbers, and graphics — just in a cut that works better as an everyday garment rather than an athletic piece.

Best for: Casual fans who want to wear the jersey beyond game day — to bars, out to eat, at watch parties, or as a layer under a hoodie in cold weather.

Fits: Runs slightly large. Consider sizing down if you want a fitted look.

3. Alternate / Special Edition Jersey

Released seasonally, alternates typically feature a third colorway beyond home and away — often a darker base, a contrast trim, or a special anniversary design. These are the collector pieces. They sell out faster than standard editions and aren't always restocked.

Best for: Collectors, dedicated fans who already have the home and away, anyone who wants the rarest piece in the lineup.

Fits: Varies by release — check the specific size guide on each product page.

Home vs. Away: Which Should You Buy First?

If you're buying your first WFA jersey, go home. Here's why.

Home jerseys use the team's primary color as the base — the one the team has been identified with for years. It's the jersey fans recognize first, the one that photographs best, and the one that's most identifiable from across a stadium.

Away jerseys are typically white or a very light secondary color, which shows dirt more easily and tends to feel less distinctly "team" than the home edition.

That said, if your favorite team has a particularly striking away design — or if you already own the home — the away is absolutely worth adding to your collection.

Our suggestion: Home jersey first. Away jersey second. Alternate when they drop.

Jersey Size Guide

This is the part most people skip — and then regret.

WFA jerseys are cut for athletics. Even the Fan Edition runs differently than a standard T-shirt. Use this guide carefully.

Men's / Unisex Sizing

Size Chest Waist Length
S 34–36" 28–30" 27"
M 38–40" 32–34" 28"
L 42–44" 36–38" 29"
XL 46–48" 40–42" 30"
2XL 50–52" 44–46" 31"
3XL 54–56" 48–50" 32"

How to measure your chest: Wrap a soft tape measure around the fullest part of your chest, under your arms, keeping it level across your back.

Pro tip: For the Pro Edition, if you're between sizes, always go up. The athletic mesh doesn't have much stretch. For the Fan Edition, your standard T-shirt size will work fine.

Women's Sizing

Size Chest Waist Hips
XS 32–33" 24–25" 34–35"
S 34–35" 26–27" 36–37"
M 36–38" 28–30" 38–40"
L 39–41" 31–33" 41–43"
XL 42–44" 34–36" 44–46"
2XL 46–48" 38–40" 48–50"

Pro tip: Women's jerseys are cut with a slightly shorter body and shaped sides. If you prefer an oversized fit — which looks great as a dress or with biker shorts — go two sizes up from your usual.

Youth Sizing

Size Age Range Height Chest
YS 6–8 46–52" 25–27"
YM 8–10 52–58" 27–29"
YL 10–12 58–62" 29–32"
YXL 12–14 62–65" 32–35"

Youth jerseys run small. For kids who are between sizes or still growing, always size up.

Choosing Your Number and Name

WFA Gear jerseys are available in two versions:

Blank jerseys — No name, no number on the back. Great for fans who want to wear the team colors without committing to a specific player, or for anyone who just prefers a cleaner look.

Player jerseys — Team-issued numbers associated with specific positions or player tributes. Check the WFA official roster for your team to find the number of your favorite player.

Note: Player-specific name-and-number customization (i.e. putting your name on the back) is not available on standard stock jerseys. If your team has a custom order requirement, apply for a wholesale account and mention it in your application — we handle team customization separately.

Caring for Your Jersey

A WFA jersey is built to last if you treat it right. Follow these simple care instructions and it'll be match-day ready for years.

Washing:

  • Machine wash cold, inside out
  • Use a gentle cycle
  • Mild detergent only — no fabric softener (it breaks down the mesh fibers)
  • Wash with similar colors

Drying:

  • Air dry whenever possible — hang it flat or on a wide hanger
  • If machine drying, use low heat for 20 minutes maximum, then air dry the rest of the way
  • Never iron directly on numbers, letters, or the WFA logo

Storing:

  • Hang rather than fold if possible — repeated folding on the same lines can stress the print over time
  • Keep out of direct sunlight during long-term storage

Frequently Asked Questions

Do jerseys shrink? The Pro Edition (performance mesh) is pre-shrunk and won't shrink noticeably in cold wash / low-heat dry. The Fan Edition (poly-cotton blend) can shrink up to half a size in high heat — always air dry or low heat.

Can I return a jersey if the size is wrong? Yes. WFA Gear accepts unworn, unwashed jerseys with tags still attached within 30 days of delivery for a full exchange or store credit. See the Returns page for full details.

Are numbers and team names screen printed or embroidered? Standard stock jerseys use heat-pressed graphics, which provide a clean, lightweight finish without adding bulk. Embroidered versions are not available in standard stock.

How long does shipping take? Standard US shipping takes 3–7 business days. Express options are available at checkout. All orders ship from our US facility — international shipping is not currently available.
